The Ramsay family and their guests spend a September evening at their holiday house on the Isle of Skye. Six-year-old James wants to sail to the lighthouse tomorrow; his father says the weather will not allow it. Mrs Ramsay knits, matchmakes and presides over a dinner, while the painter Lily Briscoe struggles with a picture. In the short middle section ten years pass, the house decays, and in brackets Mrs Ramsay, a son and a daughter die. In the last section Mr Ramsay finally takes James and Cam to the lighthouse, and Lily finishes her painting.
