Mrs Bennet has five daughters and no son, and the family estate is entailed away. When the rich Mr Bingley rents a nearby house with his prouder friend Mr Darcy, she sets out to marry them off. Elizabeth Bennet, the quick second daughter, takes a dislike to Darcy, is charmed by the plausible Wickham, and refuses Darcy's first insulting proposal.
