Anon., Traditional, Unknown author

Anonymous is the name the lists give to the works whose makers are unknown, and it covers more of the shelf than any single author: the epic of Gilgamesh from Mesopotamian clay, the Bhagavad Gita, the books of Genesis, Job, Psalms and Ecclesiastes, the Gospels of Matthew, Thomas and Judas, the Qur’an as its Muslim readers would not put it, Beowulf, the Song of Roland, the Nibelungenlied, the Poetic Edda and the Icelandic sagas, Sir Gawain, the Arabian Nights, the traditional ballads, and the Mayflower Compact and Constitution whose drafters chose to speak for a people rather than themselves.
