The creeds are short formal statements of Christian belief, recited in worship and used to test orthodoxy. The Apostles' Creed grew out of the baptismal questions of the Roman church in the second and third centuries. The Nicene Creed was drawn up by the council of Nicaea in 325 against Arius and enlarged at Constantinople in 381, defining the Son as of one substance with the Father. The Chalcedonian Definition of 451 states that Christ is one person in two natures, and the later Athanasian Creed sets out the Trinity clause by clause.
