The first Gospel in the New Testament order presents Jesus as the promised Messiah of Israel, opening with a genealogy from Abraham and the story of his birth. Five long discourses, beginning with the Sermon on the Mount, set out his teaching on the law, the kingdom of heaven and the end of the age. The narrative follows his healings and disputes with the Pharisees in Galilee, his journey to Jerusalem, the Last Supper, trial, crucifixion and resurrection, and closes with the command to make disciples of all nations.
