A manuscript written by Marx and Engels in 1845-46, abandoned unpublished, as Marx said, to the gnawing criticism of the mice, and printed in full only in 1932. Part One, on Feuerbach, is the first statement of the materialist conception of history. It argues that consciousness is determined by material life, that the division of labour produces classes and the state, and that revolution follows from the conflict between productive forces and the relations of production. The remainder attacks the Young Hegelians Bruno Bauer and Max Stirner at length. The eleven Theses on Feuerbach are usually printed with it.
