Karl Marx
1818 – 1883 · Germany and Austria
Karl Heinrich MarxKarl Marx was a Rhineland journalist driven from Germany, France and Belgium for his politics who settled in London in 1849 and spent the rest of his life in the British Museum reading room, supported by Engels, writing Capital. The Communist Manifesto of 1848, written with Engels, announced that all history is the history of class struggle; the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts and The German Ideology, unpublished in his lifetime, show the theory of alienation and of history as the development of productive forces taking shape. No thinker on the lists has had more effect on the world outside them.
