Returning from battle, the Scottish general Macbeth meets three witches who hail him as future king. Urged on by his wife, he murders King Duncan while the king is a guest in his castle and takes the throne. To hold it he has his friend Banquo killed and Macduff's family slaughtered. Lady Macbeth goes mad and dies; Macduff and Duncan's son Malcolm lead an English army against him, and the witches' equivocal prophecies come true in ways he did not foresee.
