A short prose tale, four chapters long, about a prophet who runs away. Told to preach to Nineveh, the capital of Israel's enemy Assyria, Jonah boards a ship for Tarshish, is thrown overboard in a storm and swallowed by a great fish. Vomited onto dry land, he delivers a one-sentence sermon and the whole city repents. Jonah sulks at God's mercy, and God rebukes him with a plant that withers, asking whether he should not pity a city of a hundred and twenty thousand people.
