Amos, a herdsman from Judah, prophesies against the northern kingdom of Israel in a time of prosperity under Jeroboam II. In nine short chapters of oracles and visions he denounces the rich who trample the poor, sell the needy for a pair of sandals and mask injustice with lavish worship. God rejects their festivals and demands that justice roll down like waters. The book foretells exile and ends with a brief promise of restoration.
