Aeschylus
525 BCE – 456 BCE · Greece
Aischylos, ΑἰσχύλοςAeschylus fought at Marathon and, by his own epitaph, wanted that remembered rather than his plays. He is the earliest Greek tragedian whose work survives, seven plays of perhaps ninety, and is credited with adding the second actor that made drama out of choral song. The Oresteia of 458 BCE, the only complete trilogy we have, follows the murder of Agamemnon through his son’s revenge to the founding of the Athenian court that ends the cycle of blood. Prometheus Bound, whose authorship is disputed, gives the lists their image of defiance against the gods.
