The third and longest part of The Fount of Knowledge, written by a Greek monk at Mar Saba near Jerusalem under Muslim rule. In a hundred chapters, later divided into four books, it summarises the teaching of the Greek Fathers on God and the Trinity, creation, angels, the visible world and human nature, the incarnation and the two natures and wills of Christ, and the sacraments, icons, scripture and the last things. It became the standard textbook of Eastern theology and, in Latin translation, a main source for Peter Lombard and Aquinas.
