Eight lectures James delivered in Boston and New York in 1906 and 1907, presenting pragmatism as a method for settling philosophical disputes by asking what practical difference each answer would make. He contrasts tough-minded and tender-minded temperaments, explains truth as what works or is verified in experience, and applies the method to questions of substance, free will, design, the one and the many, and religion. The book made pragmatism a public movement.
