Poe published four small volumes of verse between 1827 and 1845 and a handful of late poems; his whole poetic output fits in a hundred pages. The best known are The Raven, in which a bereaved scholar questions a bird that answers only Nevermore; Annabel Lee, Ulalume and Lenore, elegies for dead women; The Bells, an exercise in sound; To Helen; The City in the Sea; and the early Sonnet to Science and Israfel. Poe held that a poem should be short, musical and aimed at a single effect, and that the death of a beautiful woman was its most poetic subject.
