A 1914 paper that introduces narcissism, the investment of libido in the self, as a normal stage of development and a component of all later loving. Freud uses it to explain schizophrenia, hypochondria, the overestimation of the beloved, and the self-regard of parents for their children. The paper also proposes an ego ideal, watched over by a censoring agency of conscience, which prepared the way for the concept of the superego.
