Freud's account of what happens to individuals in crowds. Starting from Le Bon's description of the suggestible, impulsive mass, he explains the cohesion of groups such as the church and the army through libidinal ties. Members identify with one another because each has put the same leader in the place of his ego ideal. The essay develops the concepts of identification and the ego ideal that lead directly to The Ego and the Id.
