Returning from war to Messina, the young lord Claudio falls for Hero, the governor's daughter, while Benedick and Hero's cousin Beatrice resume a running battle of insults. Their friends trick each into believing the other is secretly in love. The prince's bastard brother Don John stages a scene that makes Claudio think Hero is unfaithful, and Claudio denounces her at the altar. She is reported dead, the bumbling constable Dogberry stumbles on the plot, and both couples are married.
