The memoir of a French army surgeon, written in his seventies as part of a defence of his methods against the Paris physicians. Paré recounts his campaigns from Turin in 1537 to the siege of Metz, the wounded he treated, and the discoveries he made on the way: that boiling oil in gunshot wounds did more harm than a simple dressing, and that ligating arteries after amputation beat cauterising them. He served four kings and never claims more than to have dressed the wound while God healed it.
