Maritain's short treatise applying the aesthetics of Aristotle and Aquinas to modern art. Art is a virtue of the practical intellect, a habit of making rather than of doing, and the artist's morality as a maker is distinct from his morality as a man. Beauty is what pleases when seen and requires integrity, proportion and clarity. Later chapters treat the rules of art, Christian art, and the purity of the artist's vocation, with examples from Rouault, Cocteau and Satie.
