A collection of Lincoln's principal speeches and public letters from the Lyceum Address of 1838 to the Second Inaugural of 1865. The core items are the Peoria speech against the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the House Divided speech, the debates with Douglas, the Cooper Union address, the First Inaugural, the messages to Congress, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address and the letters to Greeley, Conkling and Mrs Bixby. Together they trace his argument that the Declaration's promise of equality is the nation's founding principle.
