Nora Helmer seems a happy, childish wife. Years before, she secretly borrowed money, forging her dying father's signature, to pay for a journey that saved her husband Torvald's life. Now the lender, Krogstad, threatens to expose her unless she keeps him his job at Torvald's bank. When the truth comes out, Torvald thinks only of his reputation, and Nora sees that she has never been treated as an adult. She leaves him and her children, closing the door behind her.
