Nick Carraway, a young Midwesterner selling bonds in New York in 1922, rents a cottage on Long Island next to the mansion of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who throws enormous parties. Gatsby, it emerges, has built his fortune and his house to win back Daisy, Nick's cousin, whom he loved before the war and who married the rich and brutal Tom Buchanan. Their affair ends with a hit-and-run death, a murder and a funeral almost no one attends.
