A legal proclamation drafted in 1513 by the jurist Juan López de Palacios Rubios for the Council of Castile, to be read aloud to indigenous peoples before Spanish forces attacked them. It recounts the creation, the papacy and the pope's donation of the Indies to the Spanish crown, requires the hearers to accept the Church and the king, and warns that if they refuse, war, enslavement and the seizure of their goods will follow and be their own fault. It was often read in Spanish, from ships, or to empty villages.
