Two sets of identical twins, both pairs separated as infants in a shipwreck, end up in the same city of Ephesus on the same day without knowing it. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio are mistaken at every turn for their local twins, who are also called Antipholus and Dromio. Wives, merchants, a courtesan and a goldsmith all become entangled in the confusion, and an arrest for debt and a charge of madness follow before an abbess reveals the family's history and reunites everyone.
