Epicurus

341 BCE – 270 BCE · Greece

Epikouros, Epikuros

Epicurus founded his school in a garden outside Athens in 306 BCE and taught there, to women and slaves as well as citizens, that the gods do not concern themselves with us, that death is nothing to us since where it is we are not, and that pleasure, meaning the absence of pain and fear, is the end of life. Of his three hundred rolls almost nothing survives but three letters preserved by Diogenes Laertius, of which the Letter to Menoeceus is the summary of the ethics and the Letter to Herodotus of the atomic physics. Lucretius put the whole system into Latin verse.
