Aristophanes
446 BCE – 386 BCE · Greece
ἈριστοφάνηςAristophanes wrote comedies for the Athenian festivals during the Peloponnesian War and the years after it, eleven of which survive, the only complete Old Comedies we have. They attack living politicians by name, put Socrates in a basket in The Clouds, send the women of Greece on a sex strike to end the war in Lysistrata, and stage a contest between Aeschylus and Euripides in the underworld in The Frogs. Plato gave him a speech in the Symposium, and the Apology names the Clouds among the slanders that condemned Socrates. The lists read him beside the tragedians as the other half of the Athenian stage.
