Young Marlow, painfully shy with gentlewomen and easy with barmaids, is sent to the country to court Kate Hardcastle. Misdirected by the prankster Tony Lumpkin, he mistakes the Hardcastles' house for an inn and treats his host as a landlord. Kate, having seen how he freezes with a lady, passes herself off as a servant to win him. A second plot has Tony helping his cousin Constance elope with her jewels. Everything is untangled in one night. Written against the sentimental comedy of the day, it has never left the stage.
