Carl Jung

1875 – 1961 · Germany and Austria

Carl Gustav Jung, C. G. Jung

Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist who was Freud’s chosen successor until they broke in 1913 over the libido and religion, and who then built his own analytical psychology on the collective unconscious, the archetypes, introversion and extraversion, and the process of individuation. Analytical Psychology is the Tavistock lectures of 1935, the clearest statement of the system in his own words to an English audience. He explored myth, alchemy, Gnosticism and the I Ching, treated patients into his eighties, and built himself a tower at Bollingen. His conduct in Germany in the 1930s remains disputed.
