Ibn al-Arabi, Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi, Ibn 'Arabī, al-Shaykh al-AkbarIbn Arabi was born in Murcia in Muslim Spain, had visions from boyhood, travelled through North Africa, Mecca and Anatolia, and settled in Damascus, where he is buried and revered as the Greatest Master. He wrote hundreds of works on Sufi metaphysics, above all the Meccan Revelations and The Bezels of Wisdom, teaching the unity of being, that all existence is the self-disclosure of God. The Translator of Desires is the cycle of love poems he wrote in Mecca for a learned young Persian woman, Nizam, and then, when accused of impropriety, provided with a commentary explaining every verse as mystical. The lists read the poems.
