Henry James

1843 – 1916 · United States

James, H. James

Henry James, younger brother of the philosopher, left America for Europe in his thirties and became the novelist of the encounter between the two: innocent Americans and worldly Europeans, in The American, The Portrait of a Lady and, at the end, The Ambassadors, which he thought his best. His late style, long, qualified and inward, divides readers to this day. The Beast in the Jungle is the great story of a life spent waiting for something that never comes. He became a British subject in 1915 in protest at American neutrality and died the next year.
