Martin Heidegger
1889 – 1976 · Germany and Austria
HeideggerMartin Heidegger was the most influential and most compromised philosopher of the twentieth century. Being and Time of 1927 asked again what it means to be, through an analysis of human existence as thrown, anxious and bound toward death, and every later existentialism and hermeneutics descends from it. He joined the Nazi party in 1933 as rector of Freiburg and never adequately explained himself. What Is Metaphysics?, his inaugural lecture, and the Introduction to Metaphysics, from the lectures of 1935, are the ways in that the lists assign. He spent his last decades in a hut in the Black Forest, thinking about technology and the gods.
