Stanton, Cady Stanton

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a judge’s daughter who organised, with Lucretia Mott, the Seneca Falls convention of 1848 and drafted its Declaration of Sentiments on the model of Jefferson’s, holding that all men and women are created equal. The Address to the Legislature of New York of 1854 argued for married women’s property rights, custody of children and the vote, and helped win the first two. She wrote most of what Susan B. Anthony spoke, led the suffrage movement for fifty years, and in The Woman’s Bible attacked the scriptures the church used against women, which cost her the movement’s support. She died eighteen years before the vote.
