Kohei Saito is a Japanese philosopher at the University of Tokyo, a student of Marx’s ecological notebooks, whose Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto of 2020 sold half a million copies in Japan and argued that the late Marx had abandoned faith in growth for a vision of a steady-state communism, and that the climate crisis demands the same of us: shorter hours, common ownership of essential goods, and an economy that stops expanding. He is the youngest author on the lists, and the newest of them assign him with Pollin, Burton and Somerville, and the Ecomodernists as one voice in the argument about the planet.
