Samson Occum, Samson Occam

Samson Occom was a Mohegan from Connecticut converted in the Great Awakening, who learned to read at sixteen, studied with Eleazar Wheelock, became a minister and schoolteacher among the Montauk, and was sent to England in 1766, where he preached three hundred sermons and raised the money that founded Dartmouth College, which Wheelock then diverted from the Indian students it had been raised for. The Collected Writings, letters, sermons, hymns, a journal and a short autobiography, are the earliest substantial body of writing in English by a Native American. He led a migration of Christian Indians to Oneida land in New York, where he died.
