John Henry Newman
1801 – 1890 · Britain and Ireland
Cardinal Newman, St. John Henry NewmanJohn Henry Newman was an Oxford clergyman and leader of the Oxford Movement, which sought to recover the Catholic inheritance of the Church of England, until his own studies convinced him that Rome was right; he converted in 1845, the year of An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, which explained how a faith can change and remain itself. The Idea of a University, from lectures in Dublin, is the classic defence of liberal education as an end in itself. He was made a cardinal at seventy-eight and a saint in 2019. His Apologia is the finest religious autobiography in English.
