Moses Maimonides, Moshe ben Maimon, Rambam, Musa ibn Maymun

Maimonides, Moses ben Maimon, was born in Córdoba, fled the Almohad persecution to Fez and then Egypt, and became physician to Saladin’s vizier and head of the Jewish community in Cairo. He codified the whole of Jewish law in the Mishneh Torah and wrote, in Arabic, The Guide of the Perplexed, for a student troubled by the conflict between the Torah and Aristotle, reading scripture’s anthropomorphisms as figures and showing philosophy and revelation to teach the same truths. Aquinas cites him as Rabbi Moses. The saying goes that from Moses to Moses there was none like Moses.
