Julian of Norwich
c. 1373-1416 · Britain and Ireland
Dame Julian, Juliana of NorwichJulian of Norwich was an anchoress walled into a cell attached to a church in Norwich, of whom nothing is known but what she wrote: that in May 1373, at thirty, dying, she received sixteen showings of the passion of Christ, and spent the next twenty years understanding them. Showings, or Revelations of Divine Love, exists in a short and a long text, and is the first book in English by a woman. Its teaching that all shall be well, that God is our mother, and that sin is behovely, is the most hopeful in medieval theology. Eliot put her words into Little Gidding.
