Enheduanna
c. 2300 BCE · Mesopotamia
Enheduana, En-hedu-anaEnheduanna was the daughter of Sargon of Akkad, appointed by him high priestess of the moon god at Ur around 2300 BCE, and the first author in history whose name we know. The Exaltation of Inanna, a hymn in Sumerian to the goddess of love and war, written when a rebellion drove her from her temple, asks Inanna to restore her and names its author in the text. Her hymns were copied in scribal schools for five hundred years after her death. The newest lists begin with her, before Gilgamesh, as the earliest voice on the shelf.
