Anne Conway
1631 – 1679 · Britain and Ireland
Anne Finch Conway, Viscountess Conway, Anne FinchAnne Conway was an English philosopher, the pupil and correspondent of Henry More, who suffered from headaches so severe that she was treated by every physician of the age, including Harvey, and in her last years turned to the Quakers and to the Kabbalah. The Principles of the Most Ancient and Modern Philosophy, found in her papers and published in Latin in 1690, argues against Descartes and Hobbes that there is one created substance, spirit and body being degrees of it, and that every creature can rise or fall on the scale. Leibniz read it and said his monads owed something to it.
