Boethius
480 – 524 · Rome
Anicius Manlius Severinus BoethiusBoethius was a Roman senator and consul under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric, a Christian who planned to translate all of Plato and Aristotle into Latin and got as far as the logic, which was all the early Middle Ages had of either. Accused of treason, he wrote The Consolation of Philosophy in prison before his execution in 524: a dialogue with Lady Philosophy on fortune, providence and the freedom of the will that mentions Christ nowhere and was the most read book in Europe for a thousand years. Alfred, Chaucer and Elizabeth I all translated it. On Music set the theory the medieval university taught.
