Philip Nichols
1570s-1590s · Britain and Ireland
NicholsPhilip Nichols was a preacher who sailed with Drake and wrote, from the accounts of the men who had been there, Sir Francis Drake Revived, the story of Drake’s raid on the Spanish treasure trains at Nombre de Dios in 1572, when he was an unknown privateer with two small ships. Drake is said to have revised it himself, and his nephew published it in 1626 to revive the family’s fame. It is the earliest account of Drake’s exploits and the raw material of the Elizabethan sea legend, and the Harvard Classics print it with Pretty’s account of the circumnavigation among the voyages and travels.
