John Maynard Keynes

John Maynard Keynes was a Cambridge economist, Treasury official, member of the Bloomsbury group, and the most influential economist of the twentieth century. The Economic Consequences of the Peace attacked the Versailles treaty; The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money of 1936 argued that a market economy can settle into lasting unemployment and that governments must spend to lift it out, the doctrine that governed the West for forty years after the war. He negotiated the Bretton Woods system, ran a college’s investments, married a ballerina and founded the Arts Council. He said that in the long run we are all dead.
