Ernest Miller Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was a Kansas City reporter, an ambulance driver wounded on the Italian front at eighteen, a Paris expatriate under Gertrude Stein’s tuition, and by thirty the most imitated prose writer in English, with a style of short sentences and omitted feeling that he compared to an iceberg. The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, from an African safari, is a story of cowardice, courage and a marriage, and the one the lists assign. He fished, hunted, boxed, covered the Spanish Civil War, won the Nobel Prize in 1954, and shot himself in Idaho in 1961, as his father had.
